This course will examine and discuss differing concepts of Jewish community both in classical Jewish literature (Bible, siddur and Talmud, medieval Jewish writings) and in modern Jewish life. What is the unifying aspect of a community? What is the relation between the community and the individual, between the local community and all Jews (the “Jewish people”), and between insiders and outsiders? How should we conceive of Jewish communities today?
