From the science labs to the band room and the cafeteria to the playing fields, schools play a critical role in shaping the ethics and character of young people. As the practice of war and genocide during World War II teaches us, dangers exist when teachers and national leaders create their own moral systems. Yet, in the absence of a single set of standards for moral education, public and private school educators often chart their own approach to moral education. This course introduces moral education in theory and in practice, and students will be guided in writing a culminating paper about shaping the moral climate of a school.
