This course will explore issues and themes in American Jewish History, from the late nineteenth through the twentieth centuries, as reflected in classic films. We will view and discuss such films as "Hester Street," "The Jazz Singer," "Gentleman's Agreement," "Avalon" and "Goodbye Columbus." Historical context will be provided through lectures and primary and secondary source readings. Among the topics to be addressed are: immigration and acculturation, intergenerational tensions, antisemitism, and suburbanization.
