Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Jewish Education

The Doctoral Program in Jewish Education at Gratz College is intended to provide an integrated program of general education, Jewish education, and Jewish studies directed at preparing educators for leadership positions. The Ed.D. program is designed for the busy working professional. Students generally enroll for one or two courses per semester; degree candidates with the requisite prior educational background can complete their coursework in just three years.

The degree consists of 36 credits (12 doctoral-level courses), comprehensive examinations, and the completion of a doctoral dissertation or capstone project. This program is ideal for full-time educators from across the world who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree. Students can pursue the degree from a distance as long as they attend one 1 week institute each year (either in the summer or in the winter.)

Doctoral Studies at Gratz are intended to provide an integrated program of general education, Jewish education and Jewish studies.

Designed for busy professionals, the program will allow those with the requisite background to complete course work in three years. This will be followed by comprehensive examinations and the writing of an academic dissertation or a sophisticated project. Those without an academic background in both Jewish Studies and Education may be required to take additional courses to fill out their knowledge base. Students with only a B.A. degree may also apply and will need to complete pre-doctoral credits based on individual backgrounds.

There are currently 14 students in the program, each of whom has a demonstrated record as a student and as a practitioner. Their fields of expertise include: early childhood education, congregational education, day school education, secondary education and community organization of Jewish education. Their backgrounds span the entire range of ideology within the community, which is highly appropriate for Gratz College’s 112 year commitment to pluralism.
