How to Transfer Credits

As a JCHS student, you have the opportunity to earn academic credits for your Jewish educational experiences and build an educational portfolio that reflects your interests.  JCHS is community minded and assigns a credit value to approved teen programs. These credits can be transferred to a Gratz JCHS transcript.

Credits can be transferred for formal (Jewish supplementary/ synagogues or day school) and informal (camp, youth group, Israel study trip, etc.) programs of Jewish education. There is a nominal fee for informal program credit transfers as detailed below. There is no charge for transfers from formal Jewish schools.

  1. Formal Jewish schools beginning in 8th grade: A transcript or letter from the school director is required.

       • 6 credits per year for schools that meet 1 day/week
       • 10 credits per year for schools that meet 2 days/week
       • 16 credits per year for Jewish day schools
       • 8 credits per semester for Israel academic high school programs, i.e. TRY, EIE
       • 2 credits for Confirmation for current JCHS students. Student must be enrolled in JCHS in the school year when also participating in synagogue Confirmation.
  2. Informal Jewish education experiences: Credits can be transferred beginning with the summer prior to enrollment at Gratz (no earlier than 8th grade), unless there is an existing collaborative agreement with the home synagogue or previous Jewish school.  Credits assigned for Jewish camping and Israel travel programs are evaluated for duration and content.   Below are some examples of programs that we have worked with in the past.   Other programs will be evaluated by JCHS staff.  Please inquire to the JCHS office.

    Ramah = 6 credits for 8 weeks

    Galil, Pinemere, Harlam, New Jersey Y, B’nai Brith = 4 credits for 8 weeks

    Israel travel programs = 6 credits for 5-6 weeks

    USY on wheels = 6 credits for 6 weeks

    Youth group conventions = ½ credit per convention
