Our Role in the Jewish Community
Welcome to Jewish Philadelphia!
Philadelphia is alive
year-round and one of the most historic destinations in the world. The
second largest city on the East Coast, Philadelphia ranks fifth in the
nation, with a metropolitan population of 1.5 million. Gratz College is
located only 10 miles north of Philadelphia's center city, 100 miles
south of New York City and 133 miles north of Washington, DC, all
easily accessible by public transportation.
The Greater
Philadelphia area includes a Jewish population of over 240,000 and
hundreds of Jewish organizations blended into one of the nation's
largest Jewish communities. Take a run up the steps of the Philadelphia
Art Museum, relax and enjoy concerts by the river or the Philadelphia
Orchestra, attend art gallery openings in Old City, or live it up in
the many clubs found in the area. Philadelphia has a dynamic and
politically active young Jewish community that provides outlets ranging
from the Philadelphia Federation's Young Leadership Council to the
Mosaic outdoor club.
Just minutes from Philadelphia, Gratz students benefit from a
beautiful suburban town with deep Jewish tradition. Within a four-mile
radius, students have access to seven synagogues and eight colleges and
universities, while the greater Philadelphia area includes 100
synagogues and over 45 colleges and universities. Students can walk to
a train and be in downtown Philadelphia in as little as 20 minutes or
stay by the campus and enjoy a local movie theater, clubs, an evening
of music or a walk with friends in one of the many local parks. Gratz
College is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and historic homes
in the mid-Atlantic region yet is in an affordable, safe and culturally
rich community.
