Satell Trip: Day 9
Day 9: Friday, June 30, 2006
(Photos posted below)
June 29 and June 30 blend together because we woke up at 4:00 AM and made our way onto the bus in preparation for our hike up Masada. It was early and we were tired, but we finally reached the top and were amazed to see one of the most beautiful views in all the world. We also learned some great history from our tour guide of the plight of those on Masada and the Roman seige of the area.
After following the snake path down and having a well-deserved breakfast at the local youth hostel, we were bussed over to Ein Gedi, an amazing fresh water spring near the Dead Sea, where we had a chance to swim a bit in non-salty water.
Finally, we made our way to the Dead Sea. We spent time floating in the 30+ % salt concentration lake - the lowest point on earth - and just relaxing. Once we got our hands on some mud, we even had fun drawing pictures on each other with moisturizing water and dirt. Once we had some lunch and got on the bus, we then began our time at home hospitality.
The experiences of Shabbat Friday night varied from ultra-orthodox families that went to synagogue three times a day, to secular Jews that did not refrain from using electricity on Saturday. Everyone seemed to have an interesting experience. Especially at night, most met up at the local branch of Bnei Akiva, where over 40 Israeli teens hang out each week and have an activity run for them. We participated in some fun games and went home for a long sleep.
In the late evening on Saturday, we met together to take part in Seuda Shlishit (the traditional third meal on Shabbat) and made our way to a local forest for a drum circle and medurah (bonfire). We sang some songs, beat some drums, and had marshmallows. It was really great.
Tomorrow we are getting a tour of Netivot and the local area of Sdot Negev, heading up to Tel Aviv for some more brief tours, and then heading home! This might be the last time we send an update from Israel, so we we are sad to leave, but can't wait to tell you all about our experiences in person!
