Curriculum

  • Rhythms of Jewish Living
Central ideas and texts which inform rituals daily, weekly, annual, and life cycle observances. You will get in sync with the ideas, beliefs and practices of a Jewish life. What happens everyday, every week, every month? What is the Jewish cycle of life itself; from symbols to celebrations, from birth to death?
  • Purposes of Jewish Living
Essential Jewish theological concepts and ideas as they unfold in the Bible, the Talmud and other sacred texts. Why? What’s behind the mitzvot and rituals? Why are we here? This is where you’ll learn to draw the outlines of your own Jewish identification, and unify practices with reasons. Understand your covenant with God.
  • Ethics of Jewish Living
Ethical issues such as justice, life and death, sexuality and community, with case studies from Talmudic, rabbinic and contemporary literature. The real kosher meat! How should you conduct your life as a Jew? How Jewish sources can help you face the tough questions of money, sex, medicine and morals, and come to some conclusions about how to handle it all.
  • Dramas of Jewish Living Throughout the Ages
Dramatic developments, experiences and issues from different periods in Jewish history, as reflected in historical texts. What’s the connection between being Jewish today and being Jewish in the desert thousands of years ago, with only manna to eat and a temporary shelter to live in? Uncover the relevance of history to our daily lives.
  • Graduate Study
Many Melton graduates continue studying in Melton-designed and locally-designed Graduate courses that are offered in several locations each semester. Please contact the Melton Office for details.
  • The Melton Israel Seminar is the optional, but highly acclaimed, fifth course of Melton, considered a key supplement to the Core courses. It is 11 days of exploring the land and its narratives, as students study core texts on-site, to uncover new insights and contexts not possible from a classroom in the Diaspora. The Melton Israel Seminar is open to curent students and alumni with a traveling companion. The seminar is offered several times a year.
