Executive Ph.D. in Jewish Studies

Gratz College’s Executive PhD in Jewish Studies is the first doctoral program in the discipline to focus exclusively on training a new generation of public scholars and leaders in rabbinic, educational, nonprofit and public policy positions in the Jewish community and beyond. The 48-credit program leverages Gratz’s leadership in online education to cater to busy leaders and professionals who are likewise committed to high-powered professional development and deep learning experiences.

Beyond the Ivory Tower

Rising antisemitism in the aftermath of the October 7 terror attacks in Israel have inspired communal professionals to become thought leaders, equipped with nuanced understandings of Jewish history, culture, religious practice, contemporary Israel and world Jewish communities. There is an increasing need for a doctorate-caliber training program that promotes the merits and applications of Jewish knowledge and wisdom.

Gratz’s Executive PhD program fills this need with a robust core curriculum of seven seminars and colloquia designed to cultivate expertise across the breadth of Jewish Studies. Doctoral students choose five course electives (or four course electives and one professional externship) to supplement their core training according to one of three concentrations:

  • Public Scholarship
  • Executive Leadership
  • Applied Scholarship and Education

Meet the Program Director

Brendan Goldman, Ph.D.

As a scholar, I have always believed that ahavat Yisra'el (a love of the Jewish people) is an asset when studying the Jewish experience. I similarly reject the notion that Jewish Studies must be an abstract discipline unmoored from the practical demands of Jewish communal leadership.  Our Executive PhD seeks to inculcate Jewish wisdom for the purpose of elevating Jewish leadership in a post-10/7 professional world.

I enjoyed being able to study Jewish subjects and to hear different perspectives from fellow students, all while being in the comfort of my home. I enjoyed my learning experience at Gratz College and would recommend it to anyone trying to receive a better understanding of Judaism in today's modern society.
