During November we celebrate both Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week and Thanksgiving.

In commemoration of these events, Gratz College in Elkins Park is hosting an exhibit entitled “Coming Home: From Inside Out” featuring portraits and self-portraits of men and women experiencing homelessness.

The exhibit was conceived by Diana Taflin Myers, an affordable housing consultant and multimedia artist, who in 2012 chose to use her art to raise awareness about the many faces of homelessness. In particular she wanted to highlight that homelessness can affect men, women, and children of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and that these individuals and families could look just like any other American because they could be any American.  Together with Genny O’Donnell, photographer and Director of the Coordinated Homeless Outreach Center (CHOC) in Norristown, she created 18 portraits, which have been shared in galleries as well as in community and government forums every November thereafter.

This year, Diana partnered with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) to expand the exhibit.  In recognition that art is not only a vehicle for self-expression, emotional outlet and creativity, but also for healing,  HHI offers weekly art, knitting, and craft classes to mothers and children at People's Emergency Center (PEC) in West Philadelphia.  Together they mentor mothers experiencing homelessness to use art to express their passions and reflections in self-portraits and other work. The exceptional work of the mothers will be exhibited, along with Diana’s art and photographs by Patricia Scialo, an artist and photographer from Reading, PA.

All proceeds from the sale of their work will go directly to the mothers (please bring cash) and 50% of the sale of all other work will support HHI’s art program at PEC (please bring checks).

The exhibit will run from November 5, 2018 to December 31, 2018 with an artists’ reception on Sunday November 18, 2018 from noon to 3pm.  At 12:30 p.m., several of the mothers exhibiting their work will share their experiences about how art is helping them to “Come Home: From Inside Out.”
