Baseball and the Rule of Law
One (1) Ethics and One (1) Substantive Credits

Dr. Paul Finkelman, President, Gratz College
The CLE will begin with a discussion of how baseball is a coherent legal system, with judges (umpires), an elaborate code of laws, precedents, and even common law. It also allows for enormous judicial discretion. Part of this discussion will focus on how baseball teaches Americans to respect the rule of law and live under a set of rules that are applied and interpreted by judges (umpires). Then we will look at specific issues such as application of rules (think of a high strike zone or a low strike zone or the famous “pine tar” incident) ownership of baseball memorabilia (including the Barry Bonds baseball case), performance enhancement drugs, and the integration of baseball. There will be plenty of time for discussion, questions, and participation.

Kosher lunch included.
