Gratz alumna, Rae Zysman (ne Averbach) identifies as an artist and a Jew.

I graduated from Gratz Normal School in 1971. I taught Hebrew school at several synagogues and religious schools in Philadelphia and New York. I was influenced by several wonderful teachers at Gratz College, especially Dr. Nat Entin. I graduated with a degree in Art and Biology from University of Pennsylvania and worked as graphic artist for medical sciences in New York City. After my marriage and when my children were young, I studied at Touro College and became a licensed Occupational Therapist which is my current profession. I continued to paint and draw over the years. Just like my Jewish identity, my artist identity is a part of who I am.

The process of integrating art into my life and making time for the creative process was often a challenge but is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my life. Painting is process of pushing and pulling and making the paint work for you, to do what you want to do. It is a process of looking and seeing in a new way.

The process of being Jewish in today’s world is equally challenging. There are many forces pulling us away from our heritage. For me, it is important to remember all that my parents, grandparents and teachers gave to me, a rich Jewish identity and education.

I wish to say to young students now attending Gratz College, never forget your Jewish roots.  It will enhance your life for years to come.  Just like exploring art, music or creative writing, let Judaism be a passion in your life.

Proceeds from sales in the Leona P. Kramer Gallery help support Gratz College.
