The Righteous Among the Nations

The Righteous Among the Nations are non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, often at great peril to their own lives. As of January 2019, Yad VaShem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem, lists over 27,000 people it has honored as “the Righteous Among the Nations.” While it is vital that the world never forget the six million Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust, it is equally important to remember the courageous people who saved many Jewish lives from Nazi hatred. This presentation, as part of Gratz College’s One Book, One Jewish Community program, will highlight in particular Righteous people who are less well known, but equally deserving of remembrance.

Dr. Ruth N. Sandberg is Leonard and Ethel Landau Professor of Rabbinics at Gratz College, and is the Director of the graduate Certificate in Jewish-Christian Studies and the M.A. in Interfaith Leadership. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and was the co-President of the Cheltenham Area Multifaith Council. Dr. Sandberg also teaches in the Gratz College Scholars Program for Adult Education. From 2006 to 2008, she served as Dean of Students at Gratz. Before coming to Gratz, Dr. Sandberg served for five years as Director of Education at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park.
