Hebrew and Yiddish

From its founding, Gratz College has been a leader in the world of Hebrew language education in North America.  The first to promote the Ivrit b’Ivrit (Hebrew immersion) method and an early adopter of the Communicative Approach, Gratz has always led the way in innovative language instruction.  Today’s students benefit from our decades-long experience in online language teaching where they engage in live conversations in a warm and supportive environment. 

Today, Gratz College offers multiple options for Hebrew and Yiddish language classes.


HEBREW

College Language Program
For students seeking college credit, Gratz offers modern Hebrew Levels I - IV, as well as three levels of Biblical Hebrew. For students who have not previously studied Hebrew, a non-credit Mekhinah class is also available to introduce the Hebrew alphabet.  Gratz College Hebrew classes may be used by students from other colleges to fulfill their language requirements for their home university. They may also be audited by those who are seeking a robust language learning experience. Advanced students in Hebrew language who wish to teach Hebrew professionally may enroll in a certificate in Hebrew language instruction.  College language classes generally run online in the traditional 15-week semester format and are synchronous.

Continuing Education
Have you always wanted to learn the Hebrew language? Are you traveling to Israel soon? Gratz offers modern conversational Hebrew in easy-to-digest, low commitment 12-week enrichment sessions by the Continuing Education department. Classes are offered both online and in-person.

Noncredit Language Program for Teens
High school students can take Hebrew courses at a variety of levels. Contact Assistant Professor of Hebrew Dina Maiben for more information. 

Dual Enrollment for Teens
High school students may take Hebrew either for high school and/or college credit.

 

YIDDISH

College Language Program
For students seeking college credit, Gratz offers four levels of Yiddish. These courses provide interactive experiences with the Yiddish language and culture. Designed for students who can read the Yiddish/Hebrew alphabet, Gratz College Yiddish classes may be used by students from other colleges to fulfill their language requirements for their home university They may also be audited by those who are seeking a robust language learning experience. Gratz Yiddish classes run online in the traditional 15-week semester format and are synchronous.

Continuing Education
Did you hear your parents or grandparents speaking Yiddish at home? Have you always wanted to speak Yiddish with your friends? Gratz offers conversational Yiddish in a relaxing atmosphere, in 10 or 12 week sessions by the Continuing Education department. Classes are offered both online and in-person.

Language Program For Teens
High school students may take Yiddish for college credit.
