STERN FAMILY LECTURE ON ISRAEL STUDIES:

From Philly to the Philharmonic with Miriam Hartman, Principal Violist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

a portrait of Miriam Hartman with her violin

From Philly to the Philharmonic

September 19, 2021, 11 am ET

Miriam Hartman tells the story of how the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) rose from the flames of European antisemitism, flourished along with the birth of the State of Israel and continues to be an ambassador for Israel throughout the world.

From her roots in Melrose Park, PA, Ms. Hartman's path to her prestigious position in the IPO has taken her from her family’s living room to studying at Yale and Juilliard, and then playing for the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the IPO. During her 36 seasons with the IPO, she has shared the stage with music greats such as Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma. She has played during times of peace and times of war. She has also seen the IPO change from an orchestra made of immigrants to an orchestra made of musicians born in Israel, including its new Music Director, Lahav Shani.

This will be a hybrid webinar, including both live and pre-recorded content.  Miriam Hartman will join us live for a Q&A session facilitated by Kathy Elias, Chair of the Gratz Board of Governors.
