Speaker: Rabbi Ari Saks

Chanukah has become an important "high holiday" for many American Jews, what some might derisively describe as "The Jewish Christmas." In honor of the confluence of Chanukah and Christmas on this year's calendar, we will explore this concept of Chanukah as "The Jewish Christmas." In particular we will discuss:

  • The evolution of Chanukah's meaning and practice through Jewish history;
  • The particular dynamic in 20th century America of identifying a Jewish household as one "with Chanukah candles but without a Christmas tree";
  • How interfaith families and their extended families navigate celebrating both Chanukah and Christmas.

You will walk out of our Lunch 'n Learn with a greater appreciation of Chanukah and the confidence to know that even if Chanukah is "The Jewish Christmas," it can still be a "High Holiday."

Kosher lunch is provided.
