This course, through critical analysis of primary sources, scholarly literature, and cultural artifacts, students will explore the roots of antisemitism in Russian and Soviet history, from the Tsarist era to the Soviet regime, as well as its manifestations under different political regimes and social contexts. The course will also delve into the intertwining of antisemitism and anti-Zionism within Soviet propaganda, educational policies, and international relations, examining their impact on Jewish communities in Russia, the Soviet Union, and beyond. Students will critically evaluate the legacy of Russian/Soviet antisemitism and anti-Zionism in contemporary discourse, considering their implications for understanding broader patterns of prejudice and discrimination.
