This course examines the relationship between athletics, Jewish identity, and anti-Jewish prejudice across modern history and contemporary culture. The course explores how sports have served as sites of exclusion, integration, representation, and contestation, from stereotypes about Jewish bodies and athleticism to the roles of Jewish athletes, owners, fans, and media figures in shaping public life. Through historical and contemporary case studies, students will analyze how antisemitism appears in sporting cultures, institutions, and public discourse, while also considering how sports can function as a space for solidarity, belonging, and debate.
