The 21st Century offers a great many challenges to teacher including significant advances in technology and a changing landscape in the law. Education professionals and administrators must be aware of federal and state common law, legislation and regulations in the performance of their duties. This course will cover the issues of contract law in education, due process, collective bargaining, equal protection and establishment, and the legal rights and =duties of administrators, faculty, and students. The student in the course will learn how to navigate this complex environment with personal and professional integrity in both the public and private school setting. Particular attention will be paid to teacher liability, records maintenance, Constitutional protections for the student and teacher and new and emerging laws recently enacted including the Every Student Succeed Act (12/15/2015 reenactment of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act).
