HGS 519/719 - Genocide Education
Theodor Adorno once said that “the premier demand upon all education is that Auschwitz not happen again.” Auschwitz is a metonym for genocide as a generic concept, and the slogan, “never again,” has been generalized under the banner of genocide prevention. Education plays an important role in this global movement against genocide. This course begins by introducing the relevant concepts and historiography, as well as the theoretical lenses of difficult knowledge and conflict prevention. Then we explore some common practices, including the use of testimonies and mass media, images, films, and fiction, scenarios and simulations, and memorials, museums, and travel abroad opportunities.
