HGS 528/728 - The Role of Muslims and the Holocaust
This class examines the religious and political roles of Muslims during the Holocaust. We will analyze how and why Muslims were implicated in the Holocaust, the condition of the Arab world under colonialism, and Muslim stories of Jewish rescue. We will look at the geographic areas of Palestine pre-1948, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Finally, we will ask contemporary questions of antisemitism and Islamophobia today between Jews and Muslims relating to the Holocaust and its denial. We will be examining personal testimonies, current scholarship by Muslims, and primary sources from the Berlin archive.
