HGS 532/732 - Germany before the Holocaust
This course focuses on the development of Germany over the long nineteenth century and into the twentieth century, ending at the Nazi rise to power. Over the course of the semester we will explore the development of German nationalism and nation-building, the processes and responses to revolutions, industrialization, urbanization, and changing social structures, as well as the development of German imperialism and militarism. The purpose of this course is to provide a stronger depth of knowledge of the development of modern Germany in order to better understand the historical context in which Hitler's rise to power, the popularity of the Nazi party, and genocide were able to occur.
