This course aims to investigate the relationship between the Holocaust and film through historic, aesthetic, ideological, cultural, and psychological lenses. We will concentrate on a significant number of recently rediscovered and forgotten films—Polish, Czech, Yiddish, American, and French— produced in the immediate aftermath of the war to the 1960s, which challenge the idea that discussions and memorialization of the exterminated Jews were largely shrouded in silence. We will examine the relationship between documentary footage and live action in Holocaust cinematic representation and the construction of the survivor on screen. In addition, we will also watch and analyze a number of recently made Holocaust films that have challenged the existing historical and artistic conventions. The films include Our Children (1948), Border Street (1948), Pawnbroker (1964), The Juggler (1953), The Commissar (1967), Return from the Ashes (1965), Enemies a Love Story (1989), Kapo (1960), The Stranger (1946), Verboten! (1959), Black Book (2006).
