Emerging technologies including DNA analysis, data gathering, surveillance, and social media have the potential to upend how we discuss and analyze antisemitism and genocide as well as to illuminate the histories and legacies of genocide, especially the Holocaust. Students will explore the ethical, legal, and societal implications of using modern technologies to identify victims, define “ethnicity”, reconstruct past events, challenge historical narratives, write microhistories, and shape collective memory and commemorate events. Privacy, consent, and the potential for misuse will be central concerns, as will the broader questions of how science interacts with politics.
