The Holocaust left an indelible scar, with consequences that continue to echo across multigeneration Jewish families. This course is designed to introduce students to the key themes in social history of the Holocaust, especially in the areas of children, childhood and families. We will focus on the experiences of Jewish children and families, especially in Nazi-occupied Poland between 1939 and 1945, and the postwar memories and (self)- representations of young Holocaust survivors. We will use a variety of primary sources, including diaries, memoirs, written, oral and audio and video testimonies, pictorial material, and documentary films. This course will be of particular interest to curators, teachers, educators and professionals working with child Holocaust survivors and their multigenerational families.
