The Holocaust permanently changed not only the physical Polish landscape but likewise the cultural and literary landscapes. Post-Holocaust Polish-Jewish literature responds not only to the Holocaust but also to this cultural fracture. This course will explore questions such as: What is Polish-Jewish literature? How do ghosts figure into this body of literature and what do they represent? How do ghosts shape how memory is explored after the Holocaust? What is testimony and how does it figure into literature? Together, we will read literary works in translation by Julian Tuwim, Abraham Sutzkever, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Agata Tuszyńska, Hanna Krall, Rutu Modan, and others alongside theorists such as Jacques Derrida, Pierre Nora, Marianne Hirsch, Shoshana Felman, and Dori Laub to explore concepts of memory and testimony across literary genres in the historical context of post-Holocaust Poland.
