In this course, students will focus on building their “professional toolbox” of Jewish and clinical care resources. We will explore the role of a Jewish chaplain serving both Jews of all denominations, and non-Jews of all multifaith and multicultural backgrounds. We will learn research-based spiritual care assessment models and develop an understanding of chaplaincy in the psycho-social-spiritual model of whole person care. We will use case studies in various chaplaincy settings (adult and pediatric) to apply our learning. The course will emphasize the use of self, interfaith collaboration, and healthy boundaries in providing care for others in life’s most complex moments. Significant themes will include self-differentiation, cultural competency skills, and interdisciplinary teamwork. This course will be required for all chaplaincy students and will be offered together with “Spiritual Care B” (though they need not be taken in order).
