This course examines how the field of Jewish Studies – and Jewish history, in particular – has been advanced through new methodologies pertaining to what scholars David Hall and Robert Orsi have defined as “lived religion.” The course marshals examples from all epochs and geographies to account for the many ways that research has moved away from a focus on the “elites” and instead paid attention to sources that throw light on religious beliefs and practice informed by everyday life. The course will consider scholarly use of sources and notions of “time” and “place” in mediating historical change and trends.
