JST 704 - FA26B Colloquium A: Jewish Art & Archaeology in the Ancient World

This doctoral seminar examines the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Jewish literature through the lens of feminist scholarship, asking how gender and sexuality structured authority, ritual, and the production of foundational Jewish texts. Moving from Genesis and Judges through Judith and beyond, students engage the most generative recent feminist scholarship alongside the sources themselves, building skills for reading both texts and their interpretive histories critically. It is the first installment of a three-part series — Gender, Sexuality, and Judaism — tracing women, gender, and sexuality from antiquity through early modernity.
