JST 706 - FA26B Colloquium C: Modern Jewish Literature

This course introduces students to major Jewish writers such as Sholem Aleichem, I. L. Peretz, Israel Zangwill, S. Y. Agnon, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Chava Rosenfarb, Dvora Baron, and Elie Wiesel. Reading works originally written in English, Yiddish, and Hebrew—with Yiddish and Hebrew texts taught in translation—the course explores migration, tradition and secularization, language, gender, memory, antisemitism, and the upheavals of modern Jewish history. The course will include regular discussions, including discussion forums and optional synchronous Zoom sessions, as well as short written reflections. It will culminate in an essay on one or more authors studied in the course.
