JST 705 - SU26B - Colloquium B: The Jewish Apocrypha: Texts Outside the Canon
This course explores the Jewish Apocrypha—stories, prophecies, historical writings, and wisdom texts that circulated widely in antiquity but stand outside the Tanakh. Through close reading and historical analysis, we will examine how these texts illuminate the diversity of ancient Judaism in the Second Temple period. We will then turn to their later Jewish and Christian reception by looking at how different Jewish and early Christian communities engaged with these texts and negotiated questions of authority and canon.
