This course examines the pivotal role of Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook (1901–1982) in transforming his father’s theology (Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook) into a political and ideological force that reshaped Orthodox religious Zionism. Through the study of texts, speeches, and recordings by Kook and his followers, we will trace how his interpretation of his father’s thought infused religious Zionism with messianic aspirations, leading to the emergence of the Gush Emunim movement and its enduring impact on Israeli politics, identity, and society. Special attention will be given to how his theological and political legacy continues to shape contemporary debates over war, peace, and the future of the State of Israel.
