YIDD 201/501 - Yiddish I: Beginners

This course is designed for students who can read the Yiddish/Hebrew alphabet phonetically. It focuses on the development of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). They will master basic grammatical patterns, sentence structures, and the present tense. Topics will include school, daily activities, numbers, telling time, and Jewish holidays. The course will incorporate Yiddish poems and songs as well as texts in English that introduce students to various aspects of Yiddish culture.

Students with no prior experience in reading the Yiddish/Hebrew writing systems will be asked to learn the Yiddish alphabet and basic reading and writing skills prior to the beginning of the course through a self-paced Yiddish Alphabet course. Students who can read Hebrew will be provided with an overview of how reading Yiddish differs from reading in Hebrew.

Live class sessions conducted by Zoom on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8:00 - 9:30 PM Eastern Time
