Reflecting on Our Educational Mission: A Letter from Sandra Lilienthal, Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, Gratz Board of Governors

I am honored to write this article for Gratz Today. I invite you to read the latest installment of articles featuring the people and events that are helping put Gratz College on the map.

I have both master’s and doctoral degrees from Gratz College, and have served on the Board of Governors for three years. One of the great things about being part of the board is the opportunity to work with a group of people who are committed to our continued success, ensuring that Gratz is always riding the crest of the waves of education.

I was recently appointed by the chair of our Board of Governors to serve as the Academic Affairs Committee chairperson. This comes at a very exciting time for our college: we have a new president who is a scholar with great vision for our school, and we are undergoing Middle States re-accreditation. This process allows us to reflect on how well we are doing at many different levels: are we fulfilling our mission? Is our mission guiding the development of new programs and curricula? Are we constantly improving our programs and courses? How do we ensure academic consistency? How do we evaluate our courses, our faculty, and our student learning? This self-reflection guides us in planning for the future. Through this rigorous look in the mirror, we are able to continue doing what has proven to be successful, while making improvements. While not part of the accreditation process, we are also looking at new ways to help prepare our graduates as they advance in their careers after receiving a new degree from Gratz.

In the next few months, we will be heavily involved with the accreditation process. At the same time, we will be working hard to ensure that all aspects of academic affairs at Gratz are consistent with our mission. We will be involved with long-range planning and will ensure that all our programs, policies and initiatives represent our century-long belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Together with my fellow committee members, we are dedicated to:

  • supporting the college administration in establishing and maintaining high quality education programs that further the college’s mission;
  • supporting our faculty and promoting their scholarship;
  • supporting our students in any way that enhances their educational experience.

Looking forward to an amazing academic year ahead,

Sandra Lilienthal
